”It feels like water, it feels like electricity”
Written, directed, shot and scored in its entirety by one of Canada’s youngest groups of adept creatives — all of whom are still in their twenties — the Canadian film Violent is the astonishing debut feature from Amazing Factory Productions.
Violent can best be summed up as “a young woman’s dream”. Driven by the stunning visuals of the Norwegian landscape and a powerful original score, Violent centres on a young woman, Dagny, and her last memories of the five people who loved her most, vividly recalled during a catastrophic event. The story weaves gracefully through separate character-based chapters, providing glimpses into the lifelong friendship with a young sister, the increasingly ominous interactions with a seemingly benevolent family friend, and the moving wisdom of a beloved grandfather. Dagny’s memories are intertwined with raw and beautiful interpretations of how she is experiencing death.
Violent is the result of a collaboration between Amazing Factory Productions and We Are the City. Amazing Factory Productions is a tightknit Vancouver, BC based production company of four family members: siblings Andrew and Joshua Huculiak, and their cousins, siblings Joseph and Amanda Schweers. Andrew Huculiak is also a member of the renowned Vancouver band, We Are The City, along with Cayne McKenzie and David Menzel.
In 2012, these two groups, having worked together on numerous smaller projects, made the decision to embark on an ambitious endeavour. The plan was set in motion to write, produce and release a feature film to be a sister piece to We Are The City’s new album, Violent. The film’s score utilizes melodic motifs from the songs from the album, and the story took shape as a poignant interpretation of many of the themes of the songs.
